2023年の思い出　第5弾はフィリピンから来ている研究者について。

Memories of 2023 part 5 is about Research fellows from the Philippines.

RachelleさんとAlexandriaさんがフィリピンからやってきて、MALTで実験しました。

Rachelle-san and Alexandria-san came from Philippines and experimented at MALT.

後日、加速器が故障して緊急メンテナンスがあり、立ち会うことができたAlexさんはタンク内の見学もしてもらいました。
At a later date, unfortunately, the accelerator broke down. Fortunately, Alex-san was given a tour inside the tank.

Rachelleさんは一足早く帰国したため中へは入れなかった。残念。

2023年の思い出 みらい編 Oceanographic Research Vessel "Mirai"

2023年の思い出 第4弾は海洋地球研究船「みらい」についてです。

Memories of 2023 part 4 is about "Mirai".

昨年度に引き続き、MALTの研究員Qiさんが「みらい」に乗船して海水サンプルの採取をしてきました。（昨年度は「みらい」に関する記事は書き損ねました。）

Dr. Qi, a MALT researcher, got aboard the research vessel 'Mirai' to collect seawater samples.

After loading, a short rest on board.

その後、アラスカのダッチハーバーに寄港した「みらい」へQiさんが乗船し、サンプル処理をしながら清水港を目指します。

Qi-san boarded the Mirai, which was calling at Dutch Harbor, Alaska, and headed for Shimizu port while processing samples.

清水港へ帰ってきた「みらい」

Mirai returned to Japan safely!

Qi-san also returned to MALT with ridiculous amounts of seawater!

これからバリバリ精製してもらって、その後ヨウ素-129のAMS測定を行う予定です。

These are going to be purified and measured by AMS one after another.

加速器質量分析をやっています Accelerator Mass Spectrometry

Hello, this is MALT.

今年度は加速器のトラブルが立て続けに発生。なんとか直りましたが、その後は測定が続きましてなかなか更新できませんでした。。。

Some troubles with the accelerator occurred these past months and they have been almost resolved.

今日も加速器質量分析（AMS）の測定をやっています。

Today we are conducting Accelerator Mass Spectrometry.

まずは事前準備として、どこかから取ってきた試料を化学的に精製し、同重体などの不純物を極力取り除きます。

For AMS measurement, it is necessary to purify the samples.

精製したサンプルをAMS用の治具にプレスします。

Purified samples are pressed into target cathodes for the ion source.

加速器、検出器などのチューニングをします。

The accelerator and beam-line components need tuning.

測定を開始します。

Finally, measurements start.

無事に終わることを祈ります。

We finished maintenance of the accelerator tank and have started 129I-AMS measurement, (accelerator mass spectrometry for iodine-129).

名古屋大学駅を降りてすぐの坂田・平田ホールで行われたEA-AMS 8についても近々このブログでレポートしようと思います。

さて、今回は加速器タンクの下のビームライン(03ライン)にMQを移設した作業について。

We modified beam line under the accelerator tank to install MQ.

加速器タンク内にあるEQの電源が壊れてしまった上、現在諸事情あってタンク内メンテナンスができない状況ですので、代わりにMQを取り付けるという荒業にチャレンジしました。

We planed to modify the beam line to install MQ instead of broken EQ.

高校生によるポスター発表 Poster Presentation by High School Student in J-AMS18

こんにちは、棚橋です！ではなくて松崎です。いわゆるひとつのミスターです。

MALTに小さい電磁石が導入されました。宇宙塵拾いが捗ります。

We got a small electromagnet to collect cosmic dusts.

小さいけどパワフル。千代の富士を髣髴とさせる風格。

せっかくなので、これまでの宇宙塵研究の成果をAMSシンポジウムで発表してもらいました。
The research results of cosmic dusts to date was presented in J-AMS 18.

　去年スフェルールを研究していた高校生たちはひとまず引退してしまいましたが、また新しく一年生とともに研究をすることになりました。

We began new research with high school first-year students.

　研究テーマはズバリ「環境中の放射性炭素」。地球温暖化についての議論が基になりました。

お久しぶりのSSH、宇宙塵の研究です。

いよいよ、AMSに使えるように宇宙塵を化学処理していきます。

This is a report of the study of cosmic dust with super science high school students.

We carried out chemical treatments to measure with AMS.


その前に楠野先生によるイオン交換の講義が行われました。
First, the lecture of ion exchange by Kusuno sensei.

なるほど、分からん。

I understand that I can not understand.

工程がいっぱいあって複雑です。

MISDOへ旅立ちます Going on MISDO

こんにちは、ミスターです。

14Cのマシンタイムに筑波の松中さんが来てました！

Matsunaka-san in MALT for 14C-AMS operating.

松中さんと言えば、来月のアタマに筑波大学で行われる第１７回AMSシンポジウムの事務局の代表をしています。

忙しくてオシリに火がつきそうですね！

He acts as a office representative of the J-AMS17 which will be held in Tsukuba University at the beginning of the next month. His butt on fire!


そんな忙しそうな松中さんを尻目に、MALT一行は恒例のスキー合宿（MISDO）に旅立つのであった。

２０１５年！ A HAPPY NEW YEAR!

明けてました！ミスターです。

A Happy New Year! This is MALT.

陰々とした当ブログに、華が出るかもしれないという理由で密着取材してきた宇宙塵研究もいよいよ大詰め。

後はAMSでの測定を行う予定ですが、その前に発表会に合わせてデータ解析をしています。

 The study of cosmic dust with high school students is in a final stage.
 We analyze the data acquired from previous experiments.

　さて、学位論文提出の時期に向けて、AMS測定はどんどん忙しくなっています。

　年末の測定中のヒトコマ。

 On the other hand, AMS measurements are in full operation now.

陰々とした制御室。

ふんどし！ Fundoshi!

　根津神社のお祭りが盛大に行われている中、SSHの宇宙塵研究を再開しました。
　
　MALT周辺はふんどし男でいっぱいです！

 There was a festival around MALT and many people wore a fundoshi (traditional underwear).
 We restarted the cosmic dust study.


　次は採集した宇宙塵の大きさと重さを量ることが目下の課題になります。
The present work is measuring the size and weight.

宇宙塵絶賛捜索中 Cosmic Dust Now Hunting

まだまだ続いています、宇宙塵探し。

根気のいる作業です。

Hunting the cosmic dust is still ongoing.
This work calls for a lot of patience.

2人ともよくがんばっています。だいぶ慣れてきたようです。

They are really trying hard.

It seems they have gotten used to the work.

宇宙塵探し４日目 The Forth Day of Cosmic Dust Hunting

　一日お休みして本日は宇宙塵捜索の４日目です。

 After one day interval, today is the forth day of hunting the cosmic dusts.

　例によって炎天下の作業から開始。
 We started today's work under the blazing sun as usual.

９０〜３００μｍの粒子をバットに広げて・・・

90-300 micrometer-sized particles are poured into vats...

磁性物質を選り分けます。

and magnetic particles are separated.

この喜びよう、どうやら終わったらしい。

It seems that they finish the process.

昨日と同様、選り分けた磁性物質の中から顕微鏡で宇宙塵を探します。

Then, we pick up the cosmic dusts like we did yesterday.

　しばらくは、この作業をやっていくことになります。

　顕微鏡酔いに負けずに頑張りましょう。

 We will perform this work for a few days.
 I hope you overcome qualms of microscope sickness.

最後にみんなでアイスをごちそうになりました。クスノさんありがとう！

宇宙塵探し３日目 The Third day of Cosmic Dust Hunting

　３日目は昨日選り分けた９０〜３００μｍの粒子を洗浄することから始まりました。

 We washed 90-300 micrometer-sized particles which we separated yesterday.

おや、心霊写真かな？

Is there a ghost beyond the window?

　続いて、３００μｍ以上の大きさの粒子を使って磁性物質分離の練習。

 We rehearsed separating magnetic particles.

その辺に貼り付いてた磁石を使用。

Magnets they used adhered to a locker usually.

　実体顕微鏡というものでそれらしきものをピックアップしていきます。

 We picked up something that looked like a cosmic dust with stereomicroscopes. 

見つかるとイイネ！

宇宙塵探し２日目 The Second Day of Cosmic Dust Hunting

　天候に恵まれ、宇宙塵探し二日目です。

 The weather favored the second day of hunting the cosmic dust.

まず上澄み液を取り除きます。

First, we removed the supernatant fluid.

そして今度は９０μｍのふるいにかけます。

And then, we sifted deposit with 90 micrometer-meshed sieve.

作業終了してもまだまだ元気。高校生すごい。

They were still fresh after today's job was finished. Awesome!

宇宙塵探し作業初日 The First day of Cosmic Dust Hunting

高校生との共同研究、ついに宇宙塵探しが始まりました。
We started hunting the cosmic dust with high school students.

使用する海底土サンプルを開封！

We opened the soil of seabed sample. 

カッチカチになっとった。

It was quite hardened.

フィルターをかけた水を使い３００μｍのふるいにかけます。

We sifted it with a 300 micrometer-meshed sieve and water cleared through filtering.

カチカチだったので時間がかかります。

It took time due to its hardness.

一日放置して沈殿させます。初日の作業これにて終了！

It was left at rest and settled.
